Fatal Conn. fire reminds homeowners of ash dangers (AP)

HARTFORD, Conn. ? Fireplace ashes can be deceiving. Just ask anyone involved in the nearly 11,600 residential building fires in the U.S. each year that federal safety officials say are caused by hot embers or ashes.

It appears that Michael Borcina was among those duped. Fire officials in Stamford, Conn., say a bag of fireplace ashes Borcina left near the back of the home where he was staying caused a fire early Christmas morning that killed his friend's three children and their two grandparents. Borcina and the mother, Madonna Badger, escaped the blaze after failed attempts to rescue the little girls.

The fire has led to renewed safety warnings by federal and local authorities.

"What often happens, and it's a pretty common scenario that we see, is that although the fire may look out, the embers in the ashes may remain hot enough to start a fire for up to 24 hours after the fire is thought to be out," said Tom Olshanski, a spokesman for the U.S. Fire Administration.

Olshanski and local fire officials in Stamford and other communities urged homeowners this week to put fireplace ashes in a metal container and place it well away from the house. If you leave hot ashes in the fireplace, make sure there's a metal screen or glass partition in place, they said. And, of course, make sure you have working smoke detectors, they advised.

University of Vermont men's basketball coach John Becker and his family could have suffered a tragedy similar to the one in Stamford on Tuesday. A construction worker who just happened to be passing by the Beckers' home noticed it was on fire and woke the family up by knocking on the door around 6:30 a.m.

Burlington's fire marshal, Terry Francis, said the fire was caused by hot fireplace ashes in a paper bag that was placed on the back porch of the home the night before. Becker, his wife and their daughter escaped.

"We got out of there in the nick of time," Becker told the Burlington Free Press. "Kenny Roberts was the construction worker who saved us. I can't thank him enough, and I can't thank the Burlington Fire Department enough."

The Fire Safety Administration says there about 374,900 residential building fires in the U.S. every year. Those fires kill more than 2,600 people and injure another 13,000. Cooking is the leading cause, starting 44 percent of the fires.

About 192,700 of yearly residential fires spread beyond the source, and 6 percent of those fires are caused by hot embers or ashes, the Fire Safety Administration says.

And 15 percent of multiple-fatality fires are caused by unintentional or careless actions, the agency says. There are about 250 multiple-fatality fires in the U.S. each year, resulting in an estimated 825 deaths and 200 injuries.

In Stamford, fire officials say they believe Borcina, a 52-year-old construction company owner, left a bag of hot fireplace ashes near the back of the house between 3 a.m. and 3:30 a.m. The fire was reported just after 4:40 a.m.

Borcina, who left the hospital Wednesday, has declined to comment.

Badger's three daughters, 10-year-old Lily and 7-year-old twins Grace and Sarah, and her parents, Lomer and Pauline Johnson died amid frantic rescue attempts by Borcina, Badger and local firefighters. Borcina and Badger were treated at a local hospital and released.

The Connecticut medical examiner's office said Wednesday that the victims died of smoke inhalation, and Lomer Johnson also suffered a blunt head and neck injury, possibly from a fall or being hit by an object.

One of the girls, found dead just inside a window, had been placed on a pile of books, apparently so Johnson could reach in and grab her after he jumped out. Instead, authorities say, he fell through the roof.

BP money buys sports towels, Xmas lights, jingles (AP)

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. ? Sports towels and fleece blankets. A poker tournament. A $1 million Christmas display. A prom for senior citizens. BP gas card giveaways. A "most deserving mom" contest. And advertising, lots of advertising.

Florida Panhandle officials made the mix of eyebrow-raising purchases with $30 million BP gave them earlier this year to help tourism recover from 2010's disastrous Gulf oil spill.

The money allowed seven area tourism bureaus to try promotions they could never have afforded otherwise, and it has propelled the Panhandle's visitor counts to record numbers this year following a disastrous season right after the spill. The question now is what happens when the BP money dries up, most likely next April. The grants doubled and tripled the tourism-promotion budgets in these Panhandle counties, and officials worry the boost in visitors may prove fleeting.

"It is one thing to have your numbers go up when a tremendous amount of money is being put, not only in our economy, but in all of north Florida," said Curt Blair, executive director of the Franklin County Tourist Development Council. "We will see after April whether part of this was a real recovery ... or if we see fall-off. ... Whether we've done that or if we've just propped up the market."

BP announced the $30 million tourism grants in April. While the agreement for the $30 million doesn't prevent Florida from pursuing any claims against BP or others, officials there decided a week later not to join other Gulf states in a lawsuit against Transocean, the owner of the Deepwater Horizon rig at the heart of the spill.

Florida's tourism spending spree isn't the first time that BP money has allowed government officials to snag items from their wish lists.

Separately, BP had already poured hundreds of millions of dollars into the four Gulf states in the months after the oil spill ? with few strings attached. The Associated Press documented earlier this year how some of the $754 million given to local governments had been spent on tasers, SUVS and pick-up trucks, rock concerts, an iPad and other items with no direct connection to the oil spill.

In all, BP has given $150 million to Alabama, Florida, Louisiana and Mississippi for tourism promotion since the oil spill, with the Sunshine State getting the lion's share ? $62 million.

In the case of the more-recent payout, Florida Panhandle counties have allocated more than $23 million of the $30 million through September, with $13.5 million used on for television, digital, radio and print advertising. The counties have also spent millions on a variety of attention-grabbing gimmicks, The Associated Press found through public records requests and interviews.

Some wonder whether the most extravagant promotions ? such as Panama City Beach's $1 million Christmas display ? are worth it.

"It wasn't all that busy out here last weekend," Charles Walsingham, a beachside merchant near the display, said a few days after the Christmas lights were turned on and the ice rink opened in early December. "There weren't that many people over there skating and that is a lot of money to spend."

The seven counties spent $2.5 million on promotions alone.

In Pensacola, the BP money paid for $30,000 worth of sports towels and another $30,000 worth of fleece blankets given out at local sporting events. In neighboring Perdido Key, officials spent $300,000 on American Express gift cards for overnight visitors. They also purchased $12,500 worth of BP gas cards for tourists who present receipts showing they've stayed in the area, essentially putting BP funds back into the company's pocket.

Alison Davenport, chair of the Perdido Key Chamber and Visitors Center, said the goal is to get tourists driving to the area next spring. "We had no hesitation in choosing BP gas cards over any others since BP's grant money has made the incentivized travel promotion possible," she said.

Okaloosa County, home to Destin and Fort Walton Beach, is giving away a trip to the Super Bowl and tickets to the BCS championship football game to drive traffic to its Facebook page. South Walton Beach also is giving away BCS tickets on Facebook.

Okaloosa County spent a half million dollars marketing and advertising Vision Airlines, which this year launched service from the Northwest Florida Regional Airport to several Southeast cities.

The grants have funded a half-dozen fishing tournaments, a poker tournament, a national flag football championship and a soccer tournament.

It has paid for contests galore.

Carol Daley, of Arlington, Texas, won a "Search for America's Most Deserving Mom" contest from Okaloosa County. Her prizes were a one-week stay in Destin, roundtrip airfare, $1,000 for a spending spree and a 2011 Buick Enclave valued at more than $36,000. Ashley Spencer won a beach photo contest from South Walton Beach that netted her a $15,000 vacation. Franklin County officials sprinkled the area with clues and sponsored a GPS-aided treasure hunt.

A $166,000 Panama City Beach program includes a prom next month for senior citizens. The couple chosen prom king and queen from online submissions will get to invite two friends for a weekend at the beach.

"We think getting these people to talk about why their friends should be queen and king will really help get this viral, talking about Panama City Beach as a fun beach destination," said Dan Rowe, executive director of the Panama City Beach Convention & Visitors Bureau.

The BP funding paid for almost 20 different festivals.

Santa Rosa County spent $80,000 on a sand-sculpting festival. The money is paying for the Pensacola area's $120,000 Mardi Gras celebration next year, its $25,000 New Year's celebration and a $540,000 music festival. Panama City Beach used the money for a $100,000 pirate-themed festival, a $1.3 million country music festival and a $425,000 Christian music festival.

Panama City Beach's Christmas display includes the ice rink, a candy cane forest and an enormous lights display.

"I think it's a great idea," said Michael Chers, a visitor from Omaha. "People love it."

The BP money was more than tripled the tourism promotion funds normally spent by officials in Okaloosa County. It was double the regular $750,000 budget for tourism officials in Franklin County, home to Apalachicola. The $7 million Bay County got is more than double its normal $3 million budget.

"We wouldn't have been able to do two-thirds of what we did without that BP grant," said Mark Bellinger, executive director of the Okaloosa County Tourist Development Council. "We just never had the money in the past for television ads."

Tourists stayed away through much of the summer of 2010 after clumps of gooey tar washed ashore during the spill. Pensacola Beach got a got a heavy coating of gunk for a day or two, but beach towns further east saw mostly smaller tar balls. Tourism experts say the area's image suffered from months of news footage of oiled beaches.

Visitors came back in droves, though, in 2011. Okaloosa County had its best-ever June, July and September. In many counties, tourism is up as much as 20 percent over last year.

"It appears the ... efforts have been successful," said BP spokesman Craig Savage. "The campaigns, plus pent-up consumer demand have made 2011 a banner year for tourism in the Panhandle."

Apart from the advertising the Panhandle tourism bureaus have purchased, BP is launching a new national television advertising campaign this week to outline Gulf cleanup efforts.

Florida State University professor Mark Bonn isn't sure negative perceptions about the Panhandle will vanish so quickly, especially the further away the prospective visitor lives.

"I think it's going to be a five-year minimal process before people are convinced that everything is OK," said Bonn, a professor of service management. "I think it takes people time to adjust to situations."

Amazon Wins, Netflix Loses in Holiday Satisfaction Study [VIDEO] (Mashable)

[brightcove video="1350778361001" /]
Internet shoppers were happy with Amazon and disappointed in Netflix this holiday season, according to a study released Wednesday.

[More from Mashable: Man Uses Google+ Game to Propose to Girlfriend [VIDEO]]

In an annual index of ecommerce sites' customer satisfaction by analytics firm ForeSee, Amazon's performance improved while Netflix's plunged after the two companies spent several years dueling for the study's top spot. Amazon's overall score rose two points to register 88 out of 100 possible points for the index's best mark.

But Netflix, following a year marred by a series of service and public relations missteps, saw its total fall seven points for an overall rank of 79. The 8% decline in score was the steepest of all the companies included in the study.

[More from Mashable: Amazon Goes Social Shopping: What Quorus Hires Mean]

The survey considers a range of factors to rank online retailers, including website content, functionality, merchandise and prices. ForeSee considers a score of 80 to be "the standard for excellence."

Netflix appears to be experiencing continued blowback from a fiasco-plagued 2011. In July, the company unexpectedly raised its prices for both streaming and DVD delivery by 60%. Then in August, it attempted to create a spinoff company that would have required customers to create two separate accounts for what was previously one service.

Netflix then scrapped that plan in October, but its stock price had already lost half its value the month before. ForeSee says its holiday satisfaction survey is the first methodical assessment of customer satisfaction with Netflix since company's blunders earlier this year.

"Customer satisfaction is predictive, which means that Netflix's financial woes may be just beginning," ForeSee president Larry Freed said in a statement accompanying the study's release.

Amazon, meanwhile, continues its dominance of the online retail space in multiple sectors and rebranded its streaming video service earlier this year to better compete with Netflix. Amazon has also received a boost from its line of popular Kindle products, which have sold at an astounding rate recently.

While Amazon enjoyed a glowing review according to the holiday shopping study, other companies made even more impressive jumps in online customer satisfaction. Electronics retailer TigerDirect.com made the largest jump, with an 8 percent increase in customer satisfaction for an overall score of 79. JC Penney, which named former Apple executive Ron Johnson as CEO earlier this year, improved by 6% for an overall score of 83.

Gap.com and Overstock.com posted the steepest declines after Netflix, falling six and five percent, respectively. Gap.com registered an overall score of 73, while Overstock.coms' score was 72.

General online shopper satisfaction has increased from 74 when the holiday satisfaction study began in 2005 to an all-time high of 79 this year.

Where do Netflix and Amazon stand in your opinion? What e-retailers were you impressed or let down by this holiday season?

Total Recall: Meryl Streep's Best Movies

We count down the best-reviewed work of the Iron Lady star.

Meryl Streep

She's earned seven Golden Globes, a pair of Oscars, two Emmys, and a Tony nomination -- almost a real-life EGOT! -- but Meryl Streep has somehow never gotten the Total Recall treatment. We're rectifying that this week, in honor of Meryl's star turn as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady, Phyllida Lloyd's biopic about the former British Prime Minister that seems primed for a busy awards season run. From comedies to dramas, Meryl's done it all -- and tried on countless accents along the way. Let's take a look at the best-reviewed films from her illustrious career, Total Recall style!

88%

American divorce rates spiked during the late 1960s and continued to rise during the 1970s, turning the broken marriage from a private shame into a national phenomenon. And while our growing fascination with America's seeming inability to stay hitched undoubtedly produced some questionable entertainment, it also inspired some truly touching commentary on modern-day relationships -- such as 1979's Kramer vs. Kramer, Robert Benton's adaptation of the Avery Corman novel about an ad exec (Dustin Hoffman) who struggles to establish a connection with -- and later fights to keep custody of -- his young son after being left by his wife (Streep). A classic tearjerker, Kramer vs. Kramer won five Oscars (including Best Supporting Actress for Streep) and earned raves from critics like Michael Booth of the Denver Post, who called it "definitely a movie to watch together -- your kids may well seek shelter under your arm, glad to know their own families enjoy more peace."

89%

A mother-daughter cancer drama with a Bette Midler ballad over the closing credits? As Nigel Tufnel might say, you can get "none more Streep" than 1998's One True Thing. But even if it makes no bones about adhering to the three-hankie weepie formula, this is one case where that formula works: the story of a woman (Renee Zellweger) forced to put her career on hold in order to care for her estranged mother (Streep) after she learns she doesn't have long to live. Will the long-squabbling women develop a new understanding? Was Streep nominated for another Best Actress Oscar? You don't even need to ask. But what might surprise you is how low One True Thing ends up on the schmaltz spectrum. As Kevin N. Laforest pointed out for the Montreal Film Journal, "Thanks to Carl Franklin's clever direction, which always stays real close to the characters, what could have been a TV movie-of-the-week becomes a thought-provoking and touching film."

90%

In 1990's Postcards from the Edge, adapted from Carrie Fisher's semi-autobiographical novel, Streep plays an actress with a substance abuse problem, issues with her mother (Shirley MacLaine), and a terribly dysfunctional relationship with a sleazy producer who takes advantage of her without the slightest bit of remorse (Dennis Quaid). It was a meaty part, in other words -- and one that earned her a by-now-predictable Best Actress Oscar nomination. "In this era of postverbal cinema," wrote TIME's Richard Corliss, "Postcards proves that movie dialogue can still carry the sting, heft and meaning of the finest old romantic comedy."

90%

Clint Eastwood, master of cinematic understatement, directing and starring in an adaptation of Robert James Waller's best-selling, critically reviled tearjerker? It seemed like a pretty daffy idea, at least until The Bridges of Madison County unspooled on screens in the summer of 1995 -- at which point disbelieving critics were forced to doff their caps to Eastwood once again, this time for finding the smartly tender love story at the heart of Waller's book. As sensitive photographer Robert Kincaid, Eastwood was playing against type more strongly than at any point since White Hunter, Black Heart, but his gamble paid off, and if anything, critics were even more impressed with Meryl Streep's performance as the hausfrau Eastwood sweeps off her feet. It was, in the words of Cole Smithey, "perhaps the only time in history a movie was far better than its source material."

91%

Streep came to The Deer Hunter with only one minor film role to her credit, and according to legend, the screenplay spent so little time on her character that director Michael Cimino suggested she write her own lines. Whatever happened must have worked, because Streep earned her first Oscar nomination for her work in this harrowing classic about the travails of three steel workers (Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken, and John Savage) during and after the Vietnam War. Although Cimino was criticized by some for allegedly fictionalizing elements of the war, Hunter's themes resonated powerfully with the Academy -- which awarded it five Oscars, including Best Picture -- as well as critics like Wesley Lovell, who called it "A visceral film that says volumes about the horrors of war and its impact on the lives of typically well adjusted people."

Columbus Voyage Tied to Syphilis Spread? (HealthDay)

WEDNESDAY, Dec. 28 (HealthDay News) -- A new examination of the origin of syphilis supports the theory that the sexually transmitted disease was carried to Europe aboard Christopher Columbus' ships as they sailed home from the New World.

The disease was not spread through sexual contact at the time, but adapted to survive once it got to Europe, Emory University researchers say.

"Syphilis has been around for 500 years," study co-leader Molly Zuckerman, a former Emory graduate student who is now an assistant professor at Mississippi State University, said in an Emory news release. "People started debating where it came from shortly afterwards, and they haven't stopped since. It was one of the first global diseases, and understanding where it came from and how it spread may help us combat diseases today."

After analyzing skeletal evidence in 54 published reports, the researchers found that syphilis did not exist in Europe until after Columbus' historic voyage to the New World in 1492. They said that most of the skeletal material lacked characteristics that would meet standard diagnostic criteria for chronic syphilis, such as small holes on the skull and long bones.

It appears that skeletons previously considered evidence of syphilis in Europe before Columbus' trip were dated incorrectly because of seafood consumption, which would have altered the collagen levels of the skeletons, the researchers said.

Their appraisal is published in the Yearbook of Physical Anthropology.

"This is the first time that all 54 of these cases have been evaluated systematically," said study co-author George Armelagos, an anthropologist at Emory, in the news release. "The evidence keeps accumulating that a progenitor of syphilis came from the New World with Columbus' crew and rapidly evolved into the venereal disease that remains with us today."

The researchers suggested someone sailing with Columbus brought Treponema -- the bacteria that causes syphilis -- to Europe. This type of bacteria also causes other diseases that are spread through skin-to-skin or oral contact in tropical climates. Their theory is that the bacteria mutated into the sexually transmitted form to survive in the cooler and more sanitary conditions of Europe.

"In reality, it appears that venereal syphilis was the byproduct of two different populations meeting and exchanging a pathogen," Zuckerman said. "It was an adaptive event, the natural selection of a disease, independent of morality or blame."

The researchers said more study is needed to confirm their findings. "The origin of syphilis is a fascinating, compelling question," Zuckerman said. "The current evidence is pretty definitive, but we shouldn't close the book and say we're done with the subject. The great thing about science is constantly being able to understand things in a new light."

Quad-core Meizu MX may arrive in May with revamped UI, says company founder

We already knew that the dual-core Meizu MX will eventually meet its quad-core variant, but the question is when? Well, the ever elusive Jack Wong (who's actually taken a step back from the CEO position while acting as some sort of chairman) told fans on his forum that the new Android phone will probably arrive around May next year -- almost half way through the current one-year product cycle. Additionally, the Flyme OS's UI will see some big changes to accommodate Android 4.0. Can't say we're surprised, but we sure would be if the chip turns out to be something other than the leaked Samsung Exynos 4412 SoC from last month.

Quad-core Meizu MX may arrive in May with revamped UI, says company founder originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 27 Dec 2011 13:28:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Rookie mistake: Markieff Morris' NBA debut ends on tough turnover

Phoenix Suns forward Markieff Morris

Phoenix Suns forward Markieff Morris by ngerik

Markieff Morris (Phoenix Suns) played 25 good minutes and one bad second for the Suns in a close loss to the New Orleans Hornets on Monday. Markieff scored seven points (1 of 3 threes) with nine rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocks (full stats here).

Markieff?s NBA debut was equal parts good and bad.

The good? Markieff showed off his all-around game again, but didn?t foul out (only four fouls after collecting six in each of the Suns? two preseason games). Phoenix coach Alvin Gentry also trusted Markieff enough to leave him on the floor in a one-point game with 4.2 seconds left.

The bad?

Markieff tried to get the ball to Suns point guard Steve Nash, threw the ball away with a second left and the Suns lost (video).

After the game, Markieff talked to the Arizona Republic:

?I just rushed it,? Morris said. ?It was my first situation. I just tried to get the ball out of my hands basically and made a bad pass.?

Nash took some responsibility for the turnover, too. From the Republic:

The play was designed for Nash to inbound to Morris and get a return pass, but Nash widened out to avoid an area where Trevor Ariza was guarding Grant Hill.

?I told him it was a tough play when we haven?t really played together,? Nash said. ?It?s as much my fault as his.?

After the game, Gentry called Markieff ?a work in progress.? But both Nash and Suns center Robin Lopez praised Markieff for his hustle and physical play.

You can watch Markieff?s full postgame interview here (listen for a Kansas mention at the end).

More from Monday

  • Brandon Rush (Golden State Warriors) played another solid game for the Warriors on Monday. Rush logged 26 minutes (fifth-most on the team) and scored five points with three rebounds, two blocks, an assist, a steal and a three (full stats here). Warriors coach Mark Jackson spoke to the Bay Area News Group about Rush?s playing time:

"He's earned those minutes from the first day he came to this team," Jackson said. "He's not going to hurt you. He's going to make solid plays. He's going to rebound the basketball and he's going to battle defensively. ... There's a reason why we wanted him."

Golden State Warriors' Brandon Rush

Golden State Warriors' Brandon Rush by ngerik

  • Marcus Morris (Houston Rockets) only played four minutes against the Orlando Magic in his first official NBA game. In those four minutes, Marcus committed two fouls and missed two three-pointers (full stats here).

  • Drew Gooden (Milwaukee Bucks) did not start for the Bucks on Monday and played just 14 minutes against the Charlotte Bobcats before being ejected from the game. Gooden scored four points on four shots with five rebounds, two assists and a block (full stats here). Bucks coach Scott Skiles told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that Gooden will be the team?s primary backup center instead of a starter.

As for the ejection: Gooden fouled the Bobcats? Gerald Henderson as Henderson was driving for a layup. The officials called a flagrant foul on the play and sent Gooden home early. Video of the foul here, with commentary by some very enthusiastic Bobcats announcers:

  • Nick Collison (Oklahoma City Thunder) scored five points with two rebounds, two assists and a block in 22 minutes against the Minnesota Timberwolves (full stats here).

  • Cole Aldrich (Oklahoma City Thunder) dressed but did not play (coach?s decision) in his return to his home state of Minnesota on Monday. 1500ESPN spoke to Thunder coach Scott Brooks about Aldrich, who hasn?t played in either of the Thunder?s two games this year:

"I think he came back in a good place," Brooks said. "One of the things about this league is that it's difficult to step in and play.

"Only a few players can do that and have success. Cole didn't play a lot last year, but he learned a lot. He learned how this league works and learned about our system and this personnel in this league. I thought he came back a better player."

  • Josh Selby (Memphis Grizzlies) also did not play (coach?s decision).

Other notes

  • Greg Ostertag should be assigned to a D-League team this afternoon, if last week?s reports are correct. If you can?t wait until tomorrow?s recap, check out the D-League?s official Twitter account or Scott Schroeder, who originally broke the news and is on top of various D-League happenings.

  • Paul Pierce (Boston Celtics) is still day-to-day with his heel injury, according to the Boston Globe. He did not practice on Monday, and the Globe suggests he might be out until the Celtics? home opener on Friday.

  • Since commenter kusportsdotcom asked: Sherron Collins (Hacettepe University) and Russell Robinson (Trabzonspor), who both play in the Turkish Basketball League, will face off next on March 17, 2012. The two teams played each other on Dec. 3, and Collins scored 13 points with eight rebounds and five assists while Robinson registered no points with six rebounds and three assists (full stats from that game here).

PFT: Steelers to sit Roethlisberger, start Batch

Test+Pattern

Six of the Cincinnati Bengals? seven home games this season will be blacked out locally.? One of the two U.S. Senators from Ohio believes that number should be zero.

But not because he believes all non-premium tickets should be purchased for the games at Paul Brown Stadium.? Senator Sherrod Brown believes that the NFL should abandon the policy that requires non-sellouts to be blacked out in the local market.

?The NFL?s blackout policy is unnecessary,? Brown said in a statement, via USA Today.? ?The NFL is poised to earn record profits while the Cincinnati taxpayers who built the stadium will be watching reruns rather than touchdown runs.? The rule is an outdated relic that doesn?t serve the NFL or the fans.?

Brown also pointed out that the league?s new broadcast TV contracts reflect a 60-percent increase over prior amounts paid by the networks.? Thus, Brown believes that the league shouldn?t hinge the decision to televise a team?s home games upon the team?s ability to sell tickets.

The league, not surprisingly, defends the blackout policy, which was adopted in 1973.? (Prior to that, home games simply weren?t televised at all in the local market, with or without a sold-out stadium.)

?The blackout policy is very important in supporting NFL stadiums and the ability of NFL clubs to sell tickets, keeping our games attractive as television programming with large crowds; and ensuring that we can continue to keep our games on free TV,? NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said in a statement to USA Today.? ?Playing in full stadiums with thousands of fans is an important part of what makes NFL football an exciting and special entertainment event, both live and on television.? We have a limited number of games and do not want to erode the incentive to buy tickets.? Every market receives more than 100 NFL games on free TV every year, regardless of the blackout policy.?

That?s fine, but in this day and age how many people actually buy tickets to the local team?s home games due to a concern that, if they don?t, they won?t be able to see the game at all?? There will always be people who choose to attend games, and there will always be people who choose to stay home and watch whatever other game they can find on TV, or simply wait for the highlights.

The challenge for the league is to entice enough people in every market to choose to pay to attend the games.? And that means finding ways to make the in-stadium experience better (or, in the case of controlling the behavior of drunks and/or idiots and/or drunken idiots, not as bad).

It also means setting price points that will ensure a full stadium, based on the dynamics of each market.? In some places, it could mean building smaller stadiums.? While it?s indeed preferable to broadcast games with a full house of fans in the background, non-sellouts are still televised in other markets, regardless of whether the stands are full or empty.

So maybe Senator Brown is right.? Maybe the time has come to abandon the blackout policy.? As the rule approaches its 40th birthday, the only thing we know is that the blackout policy should at least be fully scrutinized, given that the manner in which folks consume video content has changed dramatically in the past four decades.

GOP candidate Mitt Romney welcomes Bush 41?s unofficial endorsement

by Associated Press

Posted on December 22, 2011 at 4:39 PM

BERLIN, N.H. -- Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney says he appreciates getting a boost from a personal hero, former President George H.W. Bush.

When asked which Republican presidential candidate he supports, Bush told his hometown newspaper, the Houston Chronicle, that Romney is the best choice. That casts aside Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who led the GOP field in early fall.

Bush said he likes Perry but he seems to have lost momentum.

While campaigning in New Hampshire, Romney thanked Bush and said his backing means a lot to him personally. He said the 41st president is a hero to him.

In an item posted on the paper?s website Thursday, Bush said he supports Romney because of his "stability, experience and principles."

Romney visited Bush in Houston earlier this month.

Mindshapes Releases Tap-A-Tune App For iPad, iPhone and iPod touch

London, ?GB???Dec 22, 2011

London, England - Mindshapes, the interactive learning company, today is proud to announce the Tap-A-Tune app for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch on the App Store. Young children will enjoy learning and playing classic nursery rhymes and holiday music with this app. The app will launch at an introductory price of $0.99 as part of the Mindshapes holiday sale.

Designed for children ages 2 and up, Tap-A-Tune helps improve hand-eye coordination and inspires a child to play music. To play a song, children tap on cute animal characters, each representing a musical note. As they do so, the animals pop up and down on the screen, dancing through the music.

"Young children love learning new songs and tunes, and Mindshapes' Tap-A-Tune app introduces them to the nursery rhymes and holiday songs they will know for their entire lives," says Christian Dorffer, a co-founder at Mindshapes. "Tap-A-Tune also helps children connect to the songs as they tap along, making the tune play on their device. They'll feel a great sense of accomplishment as they hear a song play from beginning to end." The Tap-A-Tune app has three different modes:

* Play mode:
Tap on the animals, as they pop up on the keyboard, to play the notes of a song. Afterwards, the song will play back in full.

* Freestyle mode:
Tap on any animal, in any sequence, to compose your own song.

* Baby mode:
Tap on an animal and the song will play automatically.

Children can also choose the instrument they want for each song. Choices include piano, accordion, clarinet and acoustic guitar.

Wal-Mart pulls formula after baby dies in Missouri (AP)

COLUMBIA, Mo. ? Wal-Mart and health officials awaited tests Thursday on a batch of powdered infant formula that was removed from more than 3,000 stores nationwide after a Missouri newborn who consumed it apparently died from a rare infection.

The source of the bacteria that caused the infection has not been determined, but it occurs naturally in the environment and in plants such as wheat and rice. The most worrisome appearances have been in dried milk and powdered formula, which is why manufacturers routinely test for the germs.

Wal-Mart pulled the Enfamil Newborn formula from shelves as a precaution following the death of little Avery Cornett in the southern Missouri town of Lebanon.

The formula has not been recalled, and the manufacturer said tests showed the batch was negative for the bacteria before it was shipped. Additional tests were under way.

"We decided it was best to remove the product until we learn more," Wal-Mart spokeswoman Dianna Gee said. "It could be returned to the shelves."

Customers who bought formula in 12.5-ounce cans with the lot number ZP1K7G have the option of returning them for a refund or exchange, Gee said.

The product is not exclusive to Wal-Mart. The manufacturer, Mead Johnson Nutrition, declined to answer questions about whether formula from that batch was distributed to other stores.

"We're highly confident in the safety and quality of our products," said Christopher Perille, a spokesman for the company based in the Chicago suburb of Glenview.

A second infant fell ill late last month after consuming several different types of powdered baby formula, but that child recovered, health officials said.

Powdered infant formula is not sterile, and experts have said there are not adequate methods to completely remove or kill all bacteria that might creep into formula before or during production.

Preliminary hospital tests indicated that Avery died of a rare infection caused by bacteria known as Cronobacter sakazakii. The infection can be treated with antibiotics, but it's deemed extremely dangerous to babies less than 1 month old and those born premature.

The bacteria are "pervasive in the environment," Perille said. "There's a whole range of potential sources on how this infection may have got started."

A spokeswoman for the Food and Drug Administration said the agency is investigating the death, along with the Centers for Disease Control and the Missouri Department of Health. Investigators have collected samples from the family and are testing unopened formula purchased at stores.

Siobhan Delancey said the FDA gets four to six reports a year of infant infections related to formula and has not found a powder that tested positive since 2002.

The FDA is also investigating the other case of illness, which involved a baby from Illinois whose case was reported in neighboring Missouri. But the agency does not believe there is any connection between the two, Delancey said.

Public health investigators will look at the formula itself, as well as the water used in preparing it and at anything else the baby might have ingested, Perille said.

Only two to three cases a year are reported. New Mexico saw two in 2008, including one infant who died and another who suffered severe brain damage. A Tennessee infant died in 2001 after being infected.

It could be several days before test results are available.

The family submitted two types of infant formula for testing ? the powdered version and a pre-sterilized, ready-to-eat liquid ? as well as the distilled water used to prepare the powdered product.

"We're just trying to test anything that was consumed by the baby," Laclede County Health Director Charla Baker said.

Avery was taken to a pediatrician Dec. 15 ? a week after he was born ? after showing signs of stomach pain and lethargy. When the pain persisted the next day, his parents took him to an emergency room.

He died Sunday at a hospital in Springfield after being removed from life support.

The Missouri Department of Health advised parents to follow safety guidelines for preparing powdered infant formula, including washing hands, sterilizing all feeding equipment in hot, soapy water and preparing enough formula for only one feeding at a time.

A flood of calls from worried parents prompted Missouri officials to clarify that the formula pulled by Wal-Mart is not being provided to participants in the Women, Infants and Children federal program for low-income parents.

Iran invites IAEA to visit: diplomat (Reuters)

VIENNA (Reuters) ? Iran has invited the U.N. nuclear watchdog to visit for talks, a senior Western diplomat said on Tuesday, but it was not clear whether the IAEA would accept without a commitment from Tehran to address suspicions it is seeking atomic weapons.

Reflecting widespread Western skepticism, the envoy said the invitation included no promise that talks would cover issues raised last month in an International Atomic Energy Agency report that suggested Iran had worked on developing the means to build a nuclear weapon.

"Apparently the Iranians have invited agency officials, but the offer is clearly just part of their amateurish charm offensive," the diplomat said. There is "no commitment to talk substance ... same old movie."

IAEA chief Yukiya Amano has made clear that any new visit must address the agency's concerns about potential military aims of the nuclear program, which Iran says is strictly peaceful.

A second Vienna-based diplomat was unable to confirm that Iran had issued an invitation, but said the IAEA and Tehran had been in contact about a possible visit which could take place early next year. If agreed, this could be "good news," he added.

There was no immediate comment from the IAEA, the Iranian mission in Vienna or Iranian officials in Tehran.

The IAEA carries out regular inspections of Iranian nuclear sites but has not sent a senior official for talks since August, before it released its latest report containing what was described as intelligence showing Iran's nuclear military aims.

Western countries seized on the IAEA report last month to ratchet up economic sanctions.

Previous visits by senior IAEA officials have failed to make significant progress towards resolving the long-running row over Iran's nuclear program, which has the potential to spark a wider conflict in the Middle East.

IAEA Deputy Director General Herman Nackaerts, head of the agency's safeguards inspections worldwide, was granted rare access to a facility for developing advanced uranium enrichment machines when he visited in August.

But Western diplomats tend to see such invitations as attempts by Iran to buy time.

The head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization, Fereydoun Abbasi-Davani, wrote to the IAEA in late October suggesting that a senior IAEA delegation headed by Nackaerts should visit for talks.

But Iran's angry response to the IAEA report cast doubt on those plans. Iran's IAEA ambassador said last month that "everything is messed up" by the report.

Amano said in November he had proposed sending a high-level team to Iran to "clarify the issues" raised in the report.

Another Vienna-based Western diplomat said the IAEA director general would probably only agree to send his officials to Tehran in order to specifically discuss such issues.

"I don't think they want to have talks about talks," the diplomat said.

Nike profit up 3 percent in 2Q (AP)

PORTLAND, Ore. ? Nike Inc.'s second-quarter profit rose 3 percent as strong demand and higher prices for its shoes, clothes and gear offset increased costs.

Nike and other consumer product companies have been coping for some time with higher costs for materials, labor and freight. But while others have struggled to regain their footing in the weak U.S. economy, the world's largest athletic shoe and clothing company has been able to increase sales and raise prices without consumer backlash.

"We're able to accomplish this by staying focused on what we do best - deliver innovative products and experiences that serve athletes, inspire consumers and reward our shareholders," said Mark Parker, Nike's CEO.

The company, based in Beaverton, Ore., reported Tuesday that it earned $469 million, or $1 per share, for the quarter that ended Nov. 30. That's up from $457 million, or 94 cents per share, in the same quarter last year. Nike's total revenue increased 18 percent to $5.73 billion as it sold more of its branded products in nearly every market around the globe.

The quarter beat analysts' expectations for the quarter of 97 cents per share on revenue of $5.63 billion, according to FactSet.

During the quarter, some of its most popular lines were in basketball and running, with Nike noting that it hasn't seen this much energy around running since the original boom in the sport during the 1970s. Additionally, strong sales at Converse more than offset lower revenue from the Nike Golf, Cole Haan, Hurley and Umbro brands.

Nike leaders expressed confidence in the company's future sales growth as the NBA season resumes and it prepares to launch a number of new products in anticipation of major athletic events such as the summer Olympics.

As an indication of what is ahead, Nike disclosed that orders for items that were scheduled to be delivered between December and April rose 13 percent by comparison to the same period last year. Investors keep a close eye on this measure as an indicator of demand for the coming period.

Going forward, some of Nike's costs are beginning to ease up. But the company said that won't make a difference to its bottom line for several quarters.

Nike plans to raise prices further this year to help relieve some of its margin pressures. The company did not disclose how much it will increase prices but said the hikes would be larger than those put in place during the past year. As a result of these price hikes and a seemingly endless appetite for its products, the company expects its gross margin declines to narrow over the balance of the year.

Nike's shares rose 25 cents to close at $93.63 in regular trading. Shares rose $2.37, or more than 2 percent, to $96.00 in after-hours trading on the news.
