>>> back now on this thanksgiving night. and as we watched the parade in new york today, it was almost hard to believe this was the same new york where people were flooded out and homes and neighborhoods were lost to sandy. in many neighborhoods, they're still struggling without heat and lights tonight. but they're also experiencing something else, an outpouring of good will from strangers. when sandy flooded this store in new jersey, this owner took a big hit .
>> fresh foods, meats, we lost about $60,000.
>> reporter: but as soon as he was able to open his door again, a customer asked if he would help other victories.
>> somehow he came up with an idea, i felt moved to do something, the idea was food in a box.
>> reporter: he bought the raw ingredients and put his staff to work.
>> it all comes from people working together and doing something good.
>> reporter: this week, he handed out 100 thanksgiving meals to people in queens , new york . in this part of queens, this is so much need. this lady is the principal at waterside children's studio school which just reopened this week.
>> this is right across the street from my school.
>> i just wanted to do as much as i could.
>> reporter: many of her students who still have homes don't have power or heat. which is why they were so thankful when a group of strangers offered to throw them an early thanksgiving feast.
>> we're having dinner at the school at 4:30, you're coming, right?
>> awesome turkey from here all the way down.
>> reporter: volunteers poured in from an elementary school in manhattan. they raised more than $3500 for turkey and all the fixings.
>> for families, parents, all the children who suffer, as a parent, you feel it. and you suffer, too, you want to help so desperately.
>> i'm really happy that we're back.
>> very, very special. it really is. it is a very special school .
>> this is not going to get us. we're going to build because we are survivors.
