Netflix Shares Up 8 Percent After Reports of Talks With Cable Companies

Shares of Netflix surged 8 percent Monday after reports surfaced that cable operators were considering embedding the video streamer's service into set-top boxes.

The Wall Street Journal, citing people familiar with the discussions, said Netflix is talking to Comcast and Suddenlink Communications. Bloomberg later reported talks are underway with Charter Communications and Cox Communications as well.

Netflix stock Tuesday rose $23.51 a share to $324.36 on volume that was more than twice the average.

Presumably, a deal in the U.S. would be similar to those Netflix recently struck with Virgin Media in the U.K. and Com Hem in Sweden. With those two -- at least initially -- only subscribers who use TiVo set-top boxes will be able to access a Netflix app.

Netflix's goal, though, is more likely that the app be made available on cable boxes in general, making the on-demand streamer more of a partner to multi-systems operators and less a competitor.

"We would love to reduce the friction to the end consumer and be available via the existing device in the home," Netflix CFO David Wells said this year at an investor conference.

Milky Way Galaxy Glows In Brilliant Maltese Night Sky (Photos)

The Milky Way shines brightly in two stunning images taken from the island of Malta.

Noel Camilleri shot the first image, which features the Milky Way galaxy’s brilliant band of dazzling light, on Aug. 12 from Mtahleb, Malta, using a Canon camera mounted on a tripod, 4 x 13 second exposures, 5 x 13 second darks with ISO at 2500, 24 mm lens at F4.5.

"A glance up at the night sky reveals a broad, irregular patch of light— described by the ancients as a river, as milk, and as a path," Camilleri told SPACE.com via email. "In reality, this intriguing line of light is the center of our galaxy (left part of image), as seen from one of its outer arms."

The photographer aimed her camera at the center of the galaxy, toward the constellations Sagittarius and Serpens (the Serpent), in the second photo. The picture was captured from Mtahleb on Sept. 7 using Canon camera mounted on a tripod, 10 x 8 second light-frames, 2 x 8 second dark frames, 50 mm lens at F2,8 and ISO2000.

A barred spiral galaxy comprising roughly 400 billion stars, the Milky Way stretches between 100,000 to 120,000 light-years in diameter. A light-year is the distance light travels in one year, or about 6 trillion miles (10 trillion kilometers).

Obama says will push immigration after fiscal crisis over

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama said on Tuesday that stalled immigration reform would be a top priority once the fiscal crisis has been resolved.

"Once that's done, you know, the day after, I'm going to be pushing to say, call a vote on immigration reform," he told the Los Angeles affiliate of Spanish-language television network Univision.

The president's domestic agenda has been sidetracked in his second term by one problem after another. As he coped with the revelation of domestic surveillance programs, chemical weapons in Syria, and a fiscal battle that has shut down the U.S. government and threatens a debt default, immigration has been relegated to the back burner.

But Obama, who won re-election with overwhelming Hispanic backing, had hoped to make reforms easing the plight of the 11 million immigrants who are in the United States illegally.

In June, the Senate passed an immigration overhaul, but House of Representatives Republicans are divided over the granting of legal status to those in the country illegally, a step many see as rewarding lawbreakers.

Although the president had sought comprehensive reform, he said last month he would be open to the House taking a piece-by-piece approach if that would get the job done.

Obama on Tuesday blamed House Speaker John Boehner for preventing immigration from coming up for a vote.

"We had a very strong Democratic and Republican vote in the Senate," he said. "The only thing right now that's holding it back is, again, Speaker Boehner not willing to call the bill on the floor of the House of Representatives."

Boehner said the sweeping Senate bill would not pass the House and has said the lower chamber would tackle the issue in smaller sections that would include stricter provisions on border protection.

SB Nation Partners With BlogTalkRadio For Its Move Into Live Podcasting

sb nationBlogTalkRadio has signed a big partner to its live podcasting network — sports site SB Nation.

The timing might seem interesting, since news broke today that Vox Media, the company behind SB Nation and tech news site The Verge, has raised a $40 million round led by Accel. However, SB Nation shows have actually been live on BlogTalkRadio's site since September — they just haven't formally announced until now. (Plus, it took me a little while to write this post.)

Walmart Expands Same-Day Grocery Delivery To Denver

walmartWalmart today announced its plans to expand its same-day grocery delivery service, a part of its “Walmart To Go” offering, to a new market: Denver, Colorado. This move follows the company’s ongoing grocery delivery tests which have been taking place over the last couple of years in San Jose and San Francisco. The Denver area test is currently a closed beta, meaning customers will be allowed to trial the new service on a first-come, first served basis only. For now, they can request access by signing up at Walmart.com/togo. The retailer says it began online grocery delivery in San Jose and San Francisco back in April 2011, where the service is also available to most cities along the peninsula. Customers can choose from tens of thousands of eligible items online, including fresh produce, meat and seafood, dairy, bakery items, and even non-grocery items like health and beauty products, electronics and toys. Shoppers designate a two-hour slot for their delivery, then orders are fulfilled by local Walmart Supercenters and delivered in Walmart To Go trucks. These branded trucks have previously been used in the San Jose and San Francisco areas, and are now coming to the Denver area, too.  Denver was already participating in Walmart’s broader efforts in same-day delivery, which began in select markets last fall. Denver in particular gained same-day delivery in November 2012. For background, last October, Walmart announced its intentions to experiment in this area of same-day delivery, which began with tests in Northern Virginia (outside D.C.), Philadelphia, Minneapolis, and San Jose/San Francisco, initially. Customers in those regions could shop online – though not necessarily for groceries – then have their orders sourced and fulfilled by their local Walmart stores. The company is still experimenting with price points for this service, it seems, as they note that the Denver area delivery fees will be “in the $5 to $10 range.” However, it will run some introductory offers for new participants in order to encourage sign-ups, including some free delivery options, we’re told. Same-day delivery is available for orders placed by 8 AM M.T. in the Denver market, and returns can be handled at the time of delivery, in-store, or by phoning to have a driver return to pick up the item. Though Walmart remains the largest brick-and-mortar retailer worldwide, it has lost ground online to Amazon.com over the years, which threatens its business as more consumers shift their shoppingSource: http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/Techcrunch/~3/eEJF8he-20E/

Cory Monteith's Dad Says Son 'Should Have Known Not To Touch That Drug Again'!

cory montieth pensive gif

This is just too tragic.

As the world prepares to cry its eyes out during tonight's Glee tribute episode, one man's heart may weigh even heavier than most — Cory Monteith's estranged father, Joe Monteith.

Joe recently admitted that, among other things, he never had a proper chance to say goodbye to his son.

When Cory died in July, it had been two years since he and Joe had seen each other, and they went 11 years before that without seeing each other.

Joe says the pain he's feeling now is "just ripping my insides out and tearing me apart."

He says when they last saw each other, Cory swore he was staying clean. Unfortunately, as we now know, that didn't last.

Joe continued:

"I lost my son. He should have known not to touch that drug again… I don't want to see any parent lose a child over heroin."

Joe also said he's very nervous about watching his son's Glee tribute, which is beginning to air right now, but that he hopes the show will take the opportunity to caution others on hardcore drugs use.

So do we.

Ugh. Absolutely heartbreaking.
