Insects beware: The sea anemone is coming

ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2012) ? As insects evolve to become resistant to insecticides, the need to develop new ways to control pests grows. A team of scientists from Leuven, Belgium have discovered that the sea anemone's venom harbors several toxins that promise to become a new generation of insecticides that are environmentally friendly and avoid resistance by the insects. Since these toxins disable ion channels that mediate pain and inflammation, they could also spur drug development aimed at pain, cardiac disorders, epilepsy and seizure disorders, and immunological diseases such as multiple sclerosis. This finding is described in the December 2012 issue of The FASEB Journal.

"Are toxins friend or foe? The more we understand these toxins, they are more friend, and less foe," said Jan Tytgat, Ph.D., co-author of this study from the Laboratory of Toxicology at the University of Leuven in Leuven, Belgium. "Toxicology shows us how to exploit Mother Nature's biodiversity for better and healthier living."

To make this discovery, Tytgat and colleagues extracted venom from the sea anemone, Anthopleura elegantissima, and purified three main toxins present in the venom. The toxins were characterized in depth, using biochemical and electrophysiological techniques. This provided insight into their structure, functional role and mechanisms of action. The discovery of these toxins may be considered similar to the discovery of a new drug, as they are compounds which could lead to new insecticides and possibly new treatments for human diseases.

"Because these toxins are aimed at important ion channels present not only in insect cells, they form the leading edge of our new biotechnology. Discovery of this useful marine toxin should provide additional incentive to preserve the fragile coral reefs where anemones thrive," said Gerald Weissmann, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of The FASEB Journal, "But, given current attitudes, I suspect there's a better chance of a sea anemone killing a stink bug than for us to reverse our inroads on ocean life."

Symptoms as Signals: Create a Friendship with Your Body

My greatest passion in both my work and personal life is helping people who are open and ready to see themselves in a new, multi-dimensional light. This is certainly not "new" work as thousands upon thousands of teachers have offered the same message for millennia, and yet, for the first time in human history, it feels totally available to all from everyday sources, such as myself, in a language that can be easily shared, and most importantly, heard.

Like bees to honey, individuals from all over the planet are shifting from a primarily left-brain, rational, analytical focus to a greater life balance that includes an intuitive, whole, soul-centered (right-brain) approach to life, death and everything in between. Once life has been glimpsed from this expanded vantage point, there's no going back to a more linear, limited view of reality.

Perhaps one of the fastest growing areas to exhibit this shift is in our view of health, illness and healing. While the left brain desires to perceive illness and healing as merely a physical, chemical and scientific issue, we are being urged by the feminine (right brain) energy, just beginning to re-surge on our planet after centuries underground, to take a closer, and I mean CLOSER, look at what ails us.

As we come to see our body as a magnificent, intelligent, whole system, and by intelligent I mean KNOWING, then we see the vast importance of becoming much more attuned to what our physical home is telling us about our inner world?consciousness?via tugs, nudges, and well, symptoms. Instead of fighting against our symptoms as is the understandable, natural tendency from a purely human perspective, the larger perspective of who we really are?spiritual beings?invites us to see symptoms in a totally new way, as signals to a possibility for expansion, growth and healing.

Now, I am fully aware that if ensconced in a purely rational, scientific mindset, this is where one stops reading, as it is often uncomfortable to hear, if one's reality is mostly left-brain thinking. I also totally understand if an individual and/or a loved one has been through difficult and even fatal illnesses who feel most comfortable staying in the physical realm of it all rather than delving into the soul realm. I accept that and truly wish those individuals peace and joy in their perspective. But what I am seeing in my work, is that many, many individuals are longing to address the root layer of illness rather than simply stay atop the physical layer that is dealt with and possibly "treated" by modern medicine. And because often traditional medicine is not onboard, this can seem a difficult task without encouragement from those who are fully open to a right-brain approach that complements the left. This is where I (and many others) come in!

While there is much help available in today's world to assist us in uncovering the larger perspective of our symptoms, one thing that each of us can do beginning TODAY is to create a much closer relationship?a deep camaraderie and friendship?with our very own body. By this I mean, spend time each day acknowledging the truly astounding vehicle that is OUR beautiful body. Dialogue with her regularly. Yes, talk to our cells and recognize all that they so easily, knowingly and lovingly do for us. Spend time in quiet relationship with each specific part of our body, validating its presence as an essential aspect of the glorious whole. Thank the intelligent cells in our body that KNOW when a symptom is necessary, and in what particular part of the body, to create the perfect clue to a deeper understanding of something that needs a closer look in our consciousness. Let our body know that WE, not a doctor or a healer, are ready, willing and able to listen to what it is telling us. We can create a friendship with our body NOW inviting it to be more consciously included in our life.

The fact that I am not a doctor or a scientist may turn some people away from my message, and that's more than okay. But that's actually really the whole point of my message. In many ways while science and traditional medicine continue to be highly beneficial in too many ways to mention here, the time has also come to expand the way we view healing and illness, and as I share here today, it is an intimate, personal relationship with our own body that comes from a knowing deep within that leads to ultimate healing. No one can offer us that but through our own willingness.

As I know examples are important, I'll give you a few from my own life. Yes, I am now an open book. That's what blogging tends to do to people, and becoming more vulnerable in this world has benefitted me tremendously!

1) Horrific eczema on my lower legs (yes, the itchy as hell, I won't scratch-but I HAVE to, bloody welts-kind) for over a year and a half left me cranky, embarrassed and exhausted. After numerous dermatologists and several tubes of steroid creams that offered only temporary relief, I took matters into my own hands. I felt a strong desire to see a hypnotherapist. After a three hour appointment and a huge epiphany that night upon my return home, I wept as I understood the hidden emotional root of the affliction. The eczema disappeared within three days, completely, and never to return.

2) During my nine month back trouble, my relationship and love for my body actually increased tenfold. Never before had I been forced to be so gentle with and seek out through my own body what the nerves and tissue in my leg and lower back were trying to tell me. That time period of intense uncomfortability and pain, in a way that may seem difficult to understand, created within me a gratitude for my body and all that it offers me like I have never known. Those symptoms/signals led me to forge a deeper path through my own interior which I had never dared embark on before to a blessed meeting with my soul.

3) Several years ago I knew intuitively that something was amiss in my visceral section (liver/pancreas area). No traditional doctor could detect anything wrong with me. However, three different medical intuitives/channels saw the very same thing that I felt, an energy that was not right in my abdomen. One put me on a strict vegan diet for three months to create more alkalinity and less acidity in my body, along with other inner work suggestions through which an underlying life theme was revealed. Several months later, again after much reflection, soul growth and a deepened relationship with my own body, one day I KNEW that I was healed. I went for confirmation, and indeed, the dark energy in that area had dissipated, an energy that in a dream I knew would have given me some big "trouble" a decade or so later.

I could write a whole book on this topic:) But as I know this is a blog, I will end here. If you got to the end and nothing resonated for you, then that's very understandable and totally cool with me. I LOVE you anyway! However, if this share of mine from just an everyday, soulful gal with no medical degree made you feel a spark of knowing deep in your interior, then I am here to offer insights and ideas, if desired.

Either way, I feel that our bodies deserve THREE BIG CHEERS!!!

LivingSocial To Lay Off 400 Workers - Business Insider

There is trouble in the daily-deal world.

LivingSocial is planning to lay off 400 of its U.S. workers tomorrow, reports the Washington Business Journal.

The layoffs come at a time when the entire daily-deal world is struggling. LivingSocial's layoffs prove that this is not an isolated event.?Earlier this month,?Groupon eliminated 648 jobs?prior to announcing quarterly revenues that missed expectations. The sector-wide instability even has?Groupon's board considering whether to keep founder Andrew Mason on as CEO.

We first got word of this news via PandoDaily, whose editor, Sarah Lacy, tweeted:

We reached out to the company but they declined to comment at this time.

Washington Business Journal says that the cuts are expected to come across a wide range of positions and markets, including its home base in D.C.?LivingSocial maintains six offices in the nations capital.?

The layoffs could be affected by LivingSocial net loss of $566 million in the third quarter. $496 million of that loss stems from a?massive writedown?of some of its acquisitions from 2011, the Washington Business Journal says. LivingSocial's revenue fell to $124 million in the three-month period, down from $138 million in the second quarter.

(AP) ? A wealthy Missouri man posing as "Secret Santa" stunned New Yorkers on Thursday, handing $100 bills to many in Staten Island who had lost everything to Superstorm Sandy.

The Kansas City businessman is giving away $100,000 this holiday season, and spent the day in New Jersey and New York giving away thousands. But he says money is not the issue.

"The money is not the point at all," said the anonymous benefactor as he walked up to surprised Staten Island residents and thrust crisp bills into their hands. "It's about the random acts of kindness. I'm just setting an example, and if 10 percent of the people who see me emulate what I'm doing, anybody can be a Secret Santa!"

A police motorcade with sirens took him across the borough, passing a church ripped from its foundations and homes surrounded by debris. At a nearby disaster center run by volunteers, a woman quietly collected free food and basic goods.

"Has anyone given you any money?" he asked her.

"No," replied Carol Hefty, a 72-year-old retiree living in a damaged home.

"Here," he said, slipping the money into her hand.

"But this isn't real money!" said Hefty, glancing at the red "Secret Santa" stamped onto the $100.

"It is, and it's for you," he tells her.

She breaks down weeping and hugs him.

And so it went, again and again.

Secret Santa started his daylong East Coast visit with stops in Elizabeth, N.J. Keeping close watch over the cash handouts was his security entourage ? police officers in uniform from New York and New Jersey, plus FBI agents and former agents from various states. Some have become supporters, wearing red berets marked with the word "elf" and assisting "Santa" to choose locations where people are most in need. He himself wears an "elf" cap and a red top, plus blue jeans.

The group must choose stops carefully, and refrain from simply appearing outdoors in a neighborhood, lest they be mobbed by people hearing that cash is being handed out.

At a stop at a Staten Island Salvation Army store, one woman is looking over a $4 handbag. "But you get $100!" he tells her, offering the bill.

"Are you serious?" said Prudence Onesto, her eyes widening. "Really?"

"Secret Santa," he deadpans, breaking into a broad grin.

The 55-year-old unemployed woman opened her arms and offered him a hug.

An aisle over, 41-year-old Janice Kennedy is overwhelmed: She received four $100 bills.

Unemployed with a 2-year-old daughter, she lost her home in the storm and lives with her boyfriend. The money will go toward Christmas presents and her toddler's next birthday.

"You're not alone. God bless you!" the Missouri stranger tells Phillip and Lisa Morris, a couple in their 30s whose home was badly damaged ? but now had an extra $300 in cash for rebuilding.

Secret Santa took up the holiday tradition from a close Kansas City friend, Larry Stewart, who for years handed out bills each December to unsuspecting strangers in thrift stores, food pantries and shelters. Stewart died in 2007 after giving away more than $1 million to strangers in mostly $100 bills.

The current Secret Santa will not divulge his name. Nor does he allow his face to be photographed. But he said he's been to cities across America, from San Diego to Chicago to Charlotte, N.C.

A reporter asked whether he might be a sort of Warren Buffett of Kansas City. He smiled mysteriously and said only that he admires Buffett for his philanthropy. "And I hope I give all my money away before I die."

Then, as suddenly as he arrived, the generous stranger left for the airport and home, riding in the volunteer motorcade he jokingly calls "my sleigh," zipping with ease through red lights and city traffic.

New light shed on virus associated with developmental delays and deafness

ScienceDaily (Nov. 28, 2012) ? A new study published online in PLOS ONE reveals that primitive human stem cells are resistant to human cytomegalovirus (HCMV), one of the leading prenatal causes of intellectual disability, deafness and deformities worldwide. Researchers from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine found that as stem cells and other primitive cells mature into neurons, they become more susceptible to HCMV, which could allow them to find effective treatments for the virus and to prevent its potentially devastating consequences.

"Previous studies have focused on other species and other cell types, but those studies did not evaluate what the cytomegalovirus does to human brain cells," said Vishwajit Nimgaonkar, M.D., Ph.D., professor of psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and senior author of the report. "This study is the first of its kind, and the first to discover that primitive stem cells are actually resistant to HCMV."

Access to cultured human neurons, necessary to understand the pathogenic effects of HCMV, has been limited by difficulties in growing the brain cells in the laboratory. Yet through human-induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells, researchers were able to overcome this hurdle.

The study authors derived live iPS cells by reprogramming cells called fibroblasts obtained from human skin biopsies. The iPS cells were then induced to mature through several stages into neurons, the primary cells in the brain. The researchers were able to evaluate the patterns of damage caused by HCMV on all these cells.

The research findings suggest:

? Human iPS cells do not permit a full viral replication cycle, suggesting for the first time that these cells can resist CMV infection

? CMV infection distorts iPS cell differentiation into neurons, and that may be a mechanism by which infected babies develop impairments of brain maturation and intellectual ability

? iPS-derived mature neurons are more susceptible to CMV infection and once infected show effects including defective function that have been shown in other animal studies and in other human tissues, and the neurons die a few days after infection lab studies, possibly reflecting the impact of CMV on the human brain

"The findings were quite surprising, but this is only the first in a series of studies on HCMV," added Nimgaonkar. "There is a lot of interest in what we can do to treat the infection, and current work is already underway to screen for new drugs that could be used to fight these viruses."

Between 50 and 80 percent of people in the U.S. have been infected by HCMV by the time they reach 40. Infections are rarely serious, but the virus does not leave the body. CMV is also the most common congenital infection in the U.S., and occurs when a mother contracts CMV during pregnancy and passes the virus to her unborn child. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one of every 150 children are born with CMV infection and one in five of them develop permanent problems, such as intellectual disability, vision and hearing loss, and seizures.

Pitt researchers are collaborating with the Drug Discovery Institute to further understand the cellular system and determine which agents are most effective against HCMV and similar viruses, and which treatments would be safe for human use.

The lead author of the report is Leonardo D'Aiuto, Ph.D., of the University of Pittsburgh. Collaborators on this study include Roberto Di Maio, Ph.D., Brianna Heath, Giorgio Raimondi, Ph.D., Jadranka Milosevic, Ph.D., Annie M Watson, Mikhil Bamne, Ph.D., W Tony Parks, M.D., Lei Yang, Ph.D., Bo Lin, Ph.D, Toshio Miki, M.D., Ph.D., Jocelyn Danielle Mich-Basso, Etienne Sibille, Ph.D., all of the University of Pittsburgh, and Ravit Arav-Boger, M.D., Sarven Sabunciyan, Ph.D., Robert Yolken, M.D., all of Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

The Web Is A Great Place To Discover More About Home Businesses

Achieving success at a home-based business is not everyone?s fortune, but don?t let that prevent you from giving it a try. At this time you simply need a computer to create, for a really low cost, a business that you can manage from home. It won?t take much at all. You need a small dose of determination to do the research, and a high-speed, low-cost internet access. A computer-based business has a global reach with unlimited consumers, whereas a traditional business is confined to local custom and has pricey set-up expenses. Everyone in the world with internet access is a potential client.

Click here if you?d like more information.

There are many ways to get your toes wet if you?re really considering a business on the Internet. To make a start you certainly don?t need to be an IT nerd, but being familiar with using a laptop or computer would be useful. Quite often, generating an income online has nothing to do with your technical skills, but with how much you know about the things you like doing. A good example of a web business for folks who are very good at writing would be doing copy writing. Content is often in demand, so a writer could also work on a freelance basis, obtaining writing jobs from individuals who are no good at it. All you need to do is look for those individuals who have a need, such as content, and supply it for them. Write down a few samples of your work and then do a bit of promoting, and you will be in business.

Online auction web sites are another avenue from which a large number of people are making good money. You can acquire items at wholesale value and sell them at full price, or you may already have products suitable for selling online. Getting your product offers looked at by customers is taken care of for you by places like eBay and other online auction sites. Your job is firstly to figure out a price and list your product, then wait for the sales. Once the buyer makes the purchase, you will receive the payment and then complete the purchase by sending the purchaser their merchandise.

Life is getting a lot easier in lots of ways through the advances in technology. The advent of the pc has put ownership of a business within the reach of ordinary folks. The Internet has everything you need to start a business. It offers access to products you can sell as well as information that shows you how to do it. If you could identify a business model that appeals to you and apply it to your own start-up business, that would be great.

Instead of a fulltime business you could just be after another income stream, which the Internet caters for handsomely. Spend a little time on your computer seeking information on starting an online business, and you will find lots of it. Get started on your research and you could soon begin making some cash.

The best and worst run states in America

10 hrs.

How well run are America?s 50 states? The answer depends a lot on where you live.

Every year, 24/7 Wall St. conducts an extensive survey of all 50?states in America. Based on a review of data on financial health, standard of living and government services by state we determine how well each state is managed. For the first time, North Dakota is the best run. California is the worst-run for the second year in a row.

The successful management of a state is difficult to measure. Factors that affect its finances and population may be the result of decisions made years ago. A state?s difficulties can be caused by poor governance or by external factors, such as extreme weather.

A state with abundant natural resources should have an easier time balancing its budget than one starved for resources. Regional problems or the national decline of certain industries can destroy local economies. The subprime mortgage crisis, for example, disproportionately affected states with strong construction and real estate markets. Such factors can be easily identified and noted as possible causes for a state?s poverty levels, unemployment, or strained coffers.

Despite this, it is the responsibility of each state to deal with the resources at its disposal. Each government must anticipate economic shifts and diversify its industries and attract new business. A state should be able to raise enough revenue to ensure the safety of its citizens and minimize hardship without spending more than it can prudently afford. Some states have historically done this much better than others.

24/7 Wall St.: America's Poorest States

To determine how well the states are run, 24/7 Wall St. reviewed hundreds of data sets from dozens of sources. We looked at each state?s debt, revenue, expenditure and deficit to determine how well it is managed fiscally. We reviewed taxes, exports, and GDP growth, including a breakdown by sector, to identify how each state is managing its resources. We looked at poverty, income, unemployment, high school graduation, violent crime and foreclosure rates to measure if residents are prospering.

The best-run states have certain characteristics in common, as do the worst run. The high-ranking states all have well-managed budgets. Each of the top 10 has a perfect, or near-perfect, credit rating from Standard & Poor?s, Moody?s, or both. Of the?10?worst-ranked, only three received top scores from one agency, and none from both. California is currently the only state rated A- by S&P, the lowest score given to any state. These poor-ranked states have high debt relative to both income and expenditure.

There is a strong correlation between well-educated populations and generally well-managed states. Of the?10?best-scoring states on our list, nine have among the highest percentages of adults with high school diplomas.

Employment is also closely correlated to how well a state is managed. The unemployment rates of most of the poorly ranked states are among the highest in the country. Nine of the?10?best-ranked states had an unemployment rate of less than 7% in 2011. This includes North Dakota, which had the lowest rate in the country in 2011, at just 3.6%. The average unemployment rate nationwide was 8.9% in 2011.

These are the best- and worst-run states in America.

1. North Dakota

  • Debt per capita:?$3,282 (22nd lowest)
  • Budget deficit:?None
  • Unemployment:?3.5% (the lowest)
  • Median household income:?$51,704 (20th highest)
  • Pct. below poverty line:?12.2% (13th lowest)

For the first time, North Dakota ranks as the best run state in the country. In recent years, North Dakota?s oil boom has transformed its economy. Last year, crude oil production rose 35%. As of August 2012, it was the second-largest oil producer in the country. This was due to the use of hydraulic fracturing in the state?s Bakken shale formation. The oil and gas boom brought jobs to North Dakota, which had the nation?s lowest unemployment rate in 2011 at 3.5%, and economic growth. Between 2010 and 2011, North Dakota?s GDP jumped 7.6%, by far the largest increase in the nation. This growth has also increased home values, which rose a nation-leading 29% between 2006 and 2011. North Dakota and Montana are the only two states that have not reported a budget shortfall since fiscal 2009.

2. Wyoming

  • Debt per capita:?$2,694 (18th lowest)
  • Budget deficit:?10.3% (32nd largest)
  • Unemployment:?6.0% (7th lowest)
  • Median household income:?$56,322 (13th highest)
  • Pct. below poverty line:?11.3% (6th lowest)

Wyoming is not the best-run state in the nation this year. The drop is largely due to the state?s contracting economy. In 2011, GDP shrunk by 1.2%, more than any other state. As a whole, however, the state is a model of good management and a prospering population. The state is particularly efficient at managing its debt, owing the equivalent of just 20.4% of annual revenue in fiscal 2010. Wyoming also has a tax structure that, according to the Tax Foundation, is the nation?s most-favorable for businesses ? it does not have any corporate income taxes. The state has experienced an energy boom in recent years. The mining industry, which includes oil and gas extracting, accounted for 29.4% of the state?s GDP in 2011 alone, more than in any other state. As of last year, Wyoming?s poverty, home foreclosure, and unemployment rates were all among the lowest in the nation.

3. Nebraska

  • Debt per capita:?$1,279 (2nd lowest)
  • Budget deficit:?9.7% (34th largest)
  • Unemployment:?4.4% (2nd lowest)
  • Median household income:?$50,296 (22nd highest)
  • Pct. below poverty line:?13.1% (tied-15th lowest)

Last year, Nebraska had the second-lowest unemployment rate in the nation at 4.4%. In Lincoln, the state capital, the unemployment rate was 4%, lower than all metropolitan areas in the country, except Bismarck and Fargo in North Dakota. Although far from the nation?s wealthiest state ? median income was slightly lower than the U.S. median of $50,502 ? Nebraska?s economy is strong relative to the rest of the U.S. The state is one of the leading agricultural producers, with the sector accounting for 8.3% of the state?s GDP last year. The state also had the second-lowest debt per capita in the country in fiscal 2010, at $1,279, compared to an average of $3,614 for states nationwide.

4. Utah

  • Debt per capita:?$2,356 (15th lowest)
  • Budget deficit:?14.7% (25th largest)
  • Unemployment:?6.7% (tied-11th lowest)
  • Median household income:?$55,869 (14th highest)
  • Pct. below poverty line:?13.5% (tied-17th lowest)

In fiscal 2011, Utah had a budget deficit of $700 million, equal to 14.7% of the state?s GDP. This debt-to-GDP ratio is worse than half the states in the U.S. Despite these problems, Utah has committed to reducing expenses in place of raising taxes or increasing debt. The state has also limited its borrowing. Its total debt was just under $6.5 billion in fiscal 2010, or $2,356 per capita ? less than most states ? and 40.4% of 2010 tax revenue. Both Moody?s and S&P gave Utah their highest credit ratings because of the state?s strong fiscal management. Moody?s commented that Utah has a ?tradition of conservative fiscal management; rebuilding of budgetary reserves after their use in the recession; [and] a closely managed debt portfolio.?

5. Iowa

  • Debt per capita:?$1,690 (7th lowest)
  • Budget deficit:?20.3% (18th largest)
  • Unemployment:?5.9% (6th lowest)
  • Median household income:?$49,427 (24th highest)
  • Pct. below poverty line:?12.8% (14th lowest)

Like many of the other well-run states, Iowa is one of the nation?s top agricultural centers ? the industry accounted for 6.6% of the state?s GDP in 2011. The farm economy has contributed significantly to growth, with farm earnings rising rapidly and land values skyrocketing. State GDP rose by 1.9% between 2010 and 2011 ? the 12th-highest increase in the country. Iowa?s unemployment rate fell from 6.3% in 2010 to just 5.9% in 2011, the nation?s sixth-lowest rate. The state has carried a low debt burden in recent years, averaging just $1,690 per capita in fiscal 2010, among the nation?s lowest. The state currently has the best possible credit ratings both from Moody?s and S&P.

These are the worst run states in America.

1. California

  • Debt per capita:?$4,008 (18th highest)
  • Budget deficit:?20.7 percent (17th largest
  • Unemployment:?11.7 percent (2nd highest)
  • Median household income:?$57,287 (10th highest)
  • Percent below poverty line:?16.6 percent (18th highest)

California is 24/7 Wall St.?s ?Worst Run State? for the second year in a row. Due to high levels of debt, the state?s S&P credit rating is the worst of all states, while its Moody?s credit rating is the second-worst. Much of California?s fiscal woes involve the economic downturn. Home prices plunged by 33.6 percent between 2006 and 2011, worse than all states except for three. The state?s foreclosure rate and unemployment rate were the third- and second-highest in the country, respectively. But efforts to get finances on track are moving forward. State voters passed a ballot initiative to raise sales taxes as well as income taxes for people who make at least $250,000 a year. While median income is the 10th-highest in the country, the state also has one of the highest tax burdens on income. According to the Tax Foundation, the state also has the third-worst business tax climate in the country.

2. Rhode Island

  • Debt per capita:?$9,018 (3rd highest)
  • Budget deficit:?13.4 percent (28th largest)
  • Unemployment:?11.3 percent (3rd highest)
  • Median household income:?$53,636 (17th highest)
  • Percent below poverty line:?14.7 percent (24th lowest)

Rhode Island?s finances were a mess in fiscal 2010. The state had $9.5 billion in unpaid debts, which came to 107.2 percent of that year?s revenues. At more than $9,000 per person, it?s one of the largest debt burdens in the country. The state also funded less than half of its pension obligations, worse than all states except for Illinois. In 2010, in a spectacular example of fiscal mismanagement, the state guaranteed a $75 million loan to a video game company, which has since defaulted. With one of the nation?s slowest growth rates and the third-highest unemployment rate in the U.S., at 11.3 percent, Rhode Island?s economy performed poorly overall.

3. Illinois

  • Debt per capita:?$4,790 (11th highest)
  • Budget deficit:?40.2 percent (2nd largest)
  • Unemployment:?9.8 percent (tied-10th highest)
  • Median household income:?$53,234 (18th highest)
  • Percent below poverty line:?15.0 percent (25th highest)

Although many states have budget issues, Illinois? faces among the biggest problems. In 2010, the state?s budget shortfall was more than 40 percent of its general fund, the second-highest of any state. Both S&P and Moody?s gave Illinois credit ratings that were the second-worst of all states. In addition, the state only funded 45 percent of its pension liability in 2010, the lowest percentage of any state. Governor Patrick Quinn has made the now-$85 billion pension gap a top priority for the new legislative session beginning in January.

4. Arizona

  • Debt per capita:?$2,188 (12th lowest)
  • Budget deficit:?39.0 percent (3rd largest)
  • Unemployment:?9.5 percent (tied-13th highest)
  • Median household income:?$46,709 (21st lowest)
  • Percent below poverty line:?19.0 percent (tied-8th highest)

Between 2006 and 2011, the value of homes in Arizona tumbled by 35 percent, more than every state except for Nevada. The state also had the nation?s second-highest foreclosure rate in 2011, with one in every 24 homes in foreclosure. In the aftermath of the financial crisis, Arizona had some of the nation?s largest budget shortfalls. In fiscal 2010, the state had a shortfall of $5.1 billion, equal to 65 percent of its general fund. In fiscal 2011, Arizona?s budget deficit was 39.0 percent of its general fund, the third-highest in the nation. In the recent state elections, residents voted on several measures intended to shore up the state?s finances. Voters rejected the continuation of a sales tax hike, while approving the restructuring of the state?s property tax assessment system.

5. New Jersey

  • Debt per capita:?$6,944 (5th highest)
  • Budget deficit:?38.2 percent (4th largest)
  • Unemployment:?9.3 percent (14th highest)
  • Median household income:?$67,458 (3rd highest)
  • Percent below poverty line:?10.4 percent (3rd lowest)

Between 2010 and 2011, New Jersey?s GDP contracted by 0.5 percent, more than all but three other states. The state's median household income and poverty rate were both third best in the nation. On the other hand, the state?s tax burden on its residents was second highest in the U.S. in 2010. Residents paid 12.4 percent of their income in state and local taxes, higher than any other state except New York. The state has many budget problems, as well. New Jersey?s debt as a percentage of revenue was 91.6 percent, the fifth-highest of all states.

Recreational Sport ? Steps to Follow When Choosing Your Leisure ...

How do you know which recreational sport is right for you? Though this is a simple question, it may not have a simple answer. Before answering this question, it makes sense to know the definition of a recreational sport. In simple terms, a recreational sport is any sport activity or event that one engages in during leisure time. In other words, it is a sport activity or event performed primarily for entertainment and fun. Though in some cases there may be monetary rewards associated with passtime sport, it is not usually the main goal. Other reasons associated with participating in a leisure activities includes: fitness, health, socialization, competition and sport support among others.

There are several options of leisure activities available for all age categories ranging from indoor to outdoor. Making the decision on which choice to pursue can be a real challenge and this varies significantly from one person to the other. For former professional athletes, the decision may be easier especially if they continue participating in their particular former professional sports (i.e. recreational level). The big task of choosing the right recreational sport is however on beginners. In order to make the right choice(s) if you are a beginner, it is important to consider the following general guidelines:

1. Choose a sport that you understand and are passionate about: Leisure sport in a way becomes part of your lifestyle and therefore needs to be entertaining and enjoyable. Choosing something that you don?t like or have no knowledge about can be frustrating even if your friends adore it. It only makes sense to pursue something that you know its rules and regulations. However, this does not mean one cannot learn a new sport or game, but it easier to do so if you love the sport.

2. Consider your goals and objectives: As mentioned above, there are different reasons that drive people into recreational sports. Choosing a sport that is in line with your goals, for example losing weight will only enrich the whole recreational experience. Some one looking for a recreational sport to aid in cutting down some extra body weight may benefit from running, jogging, walking, hiking or swimming among other high calorie burning sport activities as opposed to playing cards or video games. On the other hand somebody looking for a recreational sport that favors socialization may benefit from the latter.

3. Facilities, tools and equipment required: Different recreational sports may require different tools, facilities or equipment or in some cases may require none at all. These tools, facilities or equipment may also vary depending on the needs of every person. For example if you want to play golf for recreation, you will definitely have to purchase a golf club, balls and perhaps shoes. You will also need an available and accessible golf course to play. In some cases if you have more than one favorite recreational sport, you may have to choose what is more convenient based on availability of facilities. It makes more sense to go running at a nearby track especially if you get off work late in the evenings than having to drive for several miles to get to a golf course (i.e. if you like both golf and running).

4. Availability of time: Since a recreational sport is a pastime sport, choosing the right one may be dictated by how much free time is at one?s disposal. Some leisure sports are more time consuming than others. Additionally some of these sports must only be played outside. Where as some sports such as running, jogging, walking, playing tennis, playing basketball or swimming offers both indoor and outdoor options, some of them, for example playing golf, hiking, kayaking, surfing among other don?t. The more time one has, the more the options to choose from and the vice versa.

5. Seasonality: Though this may not be a big deal to people living along the equatorial line geographically, it definitely affects people living in areas with winter and summer climatic seasons. Some recreational sports such as those requiring snow may only be available during winter and only in some parts of the world. So if skiing is the only favorite recreational sport that one can participate in, it means there will be nothing to do for most of the year i.e. during the other seasons. When deciding on the right sport for recreation, it is advisable to have more than one option especially in a situation where one is affected by seasonal changes.

6. Number of participants required: Where as most sports require participation of more than one person at one time, some can be pursued individually. If your schedule does not allow group or team participation, choosing a recreational sport that will enable you to participate alone is a good idea. Jogging, walking, swimming, biking and running are great examples.

As mentioned earlier, this is not an exhaustive list of guidelines, but it is only meant to give you an idea of how to pick the best sport that will make your recreational life a success. Remember the bottom line is fun and entertainment.

Internet Marketing Cliches: The Money Is in the [Blank]

If you guessed [list], then consider yourself at the head of the class. They (the gurus) always say that the money is in the list. And they're right. Mostly. As budding IMers, we're taught from the get-go to build a list. Heck, you're on one right now (ours)--this is how you're getting our email at this very moment. List building is important. But you don't need 100,000 people on your list to make a substantial amount of money. Again, they will tell you that 1 subscriber is ...

Why Obama is standing with Egypt's President Morsi

The Obama administration ? as the US did for years with Hozni Mubarak ? wants to separate President Mohammed Morsi's domestic political maneuvers from his role as a Middle East mediator. The US needs Morsi as a peace broker between Hamas and Israel.?

Egyptian protesters rally in Cairo, Egypt, Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2012. More than 100,000 people flocked to Cairo's central Tahrir square chanting against Egypt's Islamist president recent moves which have granted himself near autocratic powers.

The United States has been here before, praising an Egyptian leader for championing Israeli-Palestinian peace efforts while expressing concern over his commitment to democracy at home. But with options limited, the Obama administration is keeping its faith in President Mohammed Morsi.

In a hectic week of Mideast unrest, Morsi emerged as America's key partner in working toward peace between the Jewish state and the Hamas leaders of the Gaza Strip, assuming a leadership role left vacant since Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's ouster nearly two years ago.

After winning U.S. and worldwide praise, Morsi immediately cashed in on his new political capital by seizing more power at home.

His actions are the latest reminder that Washington can't be sure where its relationship will stand with the Arab world's most populous country as it transitions from decades of secular autocracy. It's moving to a more democratic government, but one that is less pro-American than its predecessors.

For now, the U.S. ? as it did for years with Mubarak ? wants to separate Morsi's domestic political maneuvers from his role as a Middle East mediator.

"We believe firmly that this needs to be resolved internally as part of a transition to democracy," White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said of Morsi's new decrees, which place him above any kind of oversight, including that of the courts.

After dropping its allegiance to Mubarak in February 2011, the United States had hoped to create a new, more sustainable Egyptian alliance, structured on the legitimacy of a truly representative government. To get there, it had to work with a recalcitrant military leadership unsure about handing over power to popularly elected Islamists. It is now left trying to persuade Morsi, a former member of the Muslim Brotherhood, to settle disputes with his opponents through negotiations.

But the U.S. isn't sure how hard to push, given the tangible if halting progress toward democracy Morsi has made. And it doesn't want to undercut the Egyptian leader after he challenged hardliners in his own country by committing to monitor weapon flows to Gaza and shepherd the fragile peace he secured between Hamas and Israel last week.

"Anytime you need a leader for external promises, the quid pro quo ? admitted or not ? is to back off on criticism of their domestic standing," said Andrew Tabler, a senior fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. "It's a foreign policy tightrope the Obama administration is going to have to learn how to walk."

The U.S. reaction is being closely watched internationally. Washington has a long history of making light criticism of Mubarak's human rights abuses at home while helping prop up his government with tens of billions of dollars in mainly military assistance.

Morsi last week granted himself near autocratic powers at least until a new constitution is adopted and parliamentary elections are held ? a timeline that stretches to mid-2013. The Egyptian president says the moves are necessary to protect last year's revolution.

But the opposition says the moves neutralize the judiciary at a time when Morsi already holds executive and legislative powers. And in a show of opposition strength, more than 200,000 people flocked to Cairo's central Tahrir square on Tuesday, chanting against Morsi. "The people want to bring down the regime," they shouted.

Unemployment rates fall in half of large US cities

(AP) ? Unemployment rates declined last month in more than half of the 372 largest U.S. cities, further evidence of steady improvement in the job market.

The Labor Department said Wednesday that rates fell in 201 metro areas. They rose in 116 and were unchanged in 55. And the number of cities with unemployment below 7 percent rose to 180 last month, up from 107 a year ago.

Nationwide, the unemployment rate ticked up to 7.9 percent from 7.8 percent in September. That was mostly because more Americans began searching for work but not all found jobs. Employers added 171,000 jobs in October and the previous two months were revised higher.

Unlike the national data, the metro unemployment rates are not adjusted for seasonal trends, such as the hiring of many part-time retail employees for the winter holidays. So they tend to be more volatile from month to month.

The number of areas with sharply higher unemployment is declining. Thirty-five metro areas had unemployment rates of 10 percent or above last month. That's the same as the previous month but down from 80 a year ago.

Bismarck, N.D. once again posted the lowest unemployment rate, at 2.2 percent. The city is benefiting from an oil and gas drilling boom.

Yuma, Ariz. and El Centro, Calif. recorded the highest unemployment rates, at 29.8 percent and 28.1 percent, respectively. Both cities include large numbers of migrant farm workers.

Family: NFL great Jack Pardee ill with cancer

HOUSTON (AP) ? Jack Pardee, one of Bear Bryant's "Junction Boys" who went on to become an All-Pro linebacker and an NFL coach, has been diagnosed with gall bladder cancer and has six to nine months to live, his family said Tuesday.

The cancer has spread to other organs and that her 76-year-old father plans to move to a Denver hospice where the College Football Hall of Fame inductee's wife, Phyllis, has been receiving care since having a stroke, daughter Anne Pardee confirmed to The Associated Press.

Anne Pardee said her father was in good spirits despite the diagnosis.

Jack Pardee survived a bout with melanoma when he was 28 and in the middle of his 15-year NFL playing career.

He played only six-man football at Christoval High School in west-central Texas, near San Angelo, before moving on to Texas A&M. Bryant became the Aggies' coach in 1954 and moved their preseason camp to desolate Junction, about 100 miles northwest of San Antonio.

The state endured a severe drought and historic heat wave that year, but Bryant worked his team through the brutal conditions and refused to allow water breaks in an effort to toughest players. Pardee was one of 35 players who made it through to the end of the 10-day camp without quitting.

Pardee played three seasons at Texas A&M and was drafted by Los Angeles in 1957. He played for the Rams from 1957-64, sat out a year to cope with his melanoma, then played seven more seasons. He finished his playing career with the Washington Redskins in 1973.

Pardee stuck with the NFL and was the Chicago Bears' head coach from 1975-77. He coached the Redskins from 1978-80 and was fired after Washington went 6-10. He served as San Diego's defensive coordinator for one season, then returned to Texas to coach the USFL's Houston Gamblers.

Pardee was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1986. When the USFL disbanded in 1987, Pardee became the coach at the University of Houston and brought along the fast-paced "Run-and-Shoot" offense that worked well with the Gamblers.

The NCAA levied severe sanctions on the program in 1988, the result of violations committed under previous coach Bill Yeoman. Houston was banned from playing in a bowl game for two years and banned from playing on television in the 1989 season.

But the Cougars led the nation in total offense (624.9 yards per game) and passing offense (511 yards per game) in 1989, and quarterback Andre Ware won the Heisman Trophy. Houston finished 9-2 and ranked No. 14 in the nation.

Pardee became the coach of the NFL's Houston Oilers in 1990, and led the team to the playoffs in each of his first four seasons. Oilers owner Bud Adams traded star quarterback Warren Moon to Minnesota before the 1994 season, and Pardee resigned after a 1-9 start that year.

His name emerged 13 years later for the Houston job, but the school hired Kevin Sumlin instead. Pardee's son, Ted, is currently the color analyst for Houston football radio broadcasts.

Pardee's illness was first reported Tuesday by KTRK-TV of Houston.
