Many rural homebuyers are used to this lifestyle. They often own horses or enjoy boating, gardening, hiking or other outdoor activities. Some of these buyers will be new to rural living and making a change in lifestyle. To many who choose the rural lifestyle, living near a small town or in one is best, because there are grocery stores, doctors, restaurants and businesses nearby. Rural buyers will want a certain amount of acreage and outbuildings for additional guests or activities. Some of the buyers who want to own rural property will be more inclined to ask about green built features in a home, or be willing to purchase green built homes.

Living in the Suburbs
Some families and couples want peace and quiet or they choose to raise their children outside of rural areas and big cities ? but still want to be close to a host of activities. So they choose suburban lifestyles. Many suburban developments and communities are close to a city or an interstate entrance. Subdivisions appeal to various lifestyles such as: golf communities, waterfront homes with docks or dock access for boating, homes near a historic area, houses close to a national park or public trails, or nearby a shopping district. It takes only a few minutes of watching television to see that people seek recognition, often confusing notoriety with greatness. Greatness is actually found in unselfed love, by disregarding one?s mere personal advantage over that of another. Those who allow pride and ambition to mistake unselfed love for weakness deprive themselves of the very power to be great, for unselfed love is what connects us to the infinite power of the universe we call God, divine Love, the intelligent source of life.

Such spiritual power is proved practical. To me, the unjustly accused Daniel was safe in the lions? den because he accepted the power of God?s love and rejected self-righteous resentment. And Christ Jesus proved the power of unselfed love to overcome death. Fear of losing our identity may prevent us from acknowledging that God is the source of our ability. But we cannot be lost or absorbed in our Creator. Just as the sunbeam is evidence of the sun, so we individualize the power of God.

Putting down the personal, limited ?me? and ?mine? of self-will, self-justification, and self-love ? seen in hatred, revenge, lust, and deceit ? opens the glories of infinite Love. The Apostle Paul said, ?Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another? (Romans 12:10).

This month ? Black History Month here in the United States ? has caused me to reflect once again on some of the stunning examples of that biblical admonition made practical by blacks throughout history despite the oppression they faced. Booker T. Washington, for example, echoed that biblical axiom when he wrote in his autobiography, ?I would permit no man, no matter what his colour might be, to narrow and degrade my soul by making me hate him? (?Up from Slavery,? p. 165).?

Washington was a successful educator, author, and political leader. While he was taking a walk one day after becoming president of his Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, a woman stopped him and asked him to chop some wood for her. He did so, and stacked it for her. A little girl recognized him and later told the woman who he was. The woman went to his office to apologize, and he replied, ?It?s perfectly all right, madam. Occasionally I enjoy a little manual labor. Besides, it?s always a delight to do something for a friend? (Gary Chapman, ?Love As a Way of Life: Seven Keys to Transforming Every Aspect of Your Life,? p. 108).

What makes this generous, neighborly act notable is that Washington had been born into slavery, and the woman was white. This took place during the age of Jim Crow segregation, long before Alabama and other states acknowledged human rights as belonging to people of all races.

So what can explain how, despite the unspeakable evil of slavery and discrimination, Washington prospered? He loved, choosing to put down a limited sense of self that might rile pride and ambition, to help others. This statement from Mary Baker Eddy, the discoverer and founder of Christian Science, for me sheds light on his actions. She explained: ?He who is afraid of being too generous has lost the power of being magnanimous. The best man or woman is the most unselfed? (?The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany,? p. 165).

Washington gave much more than a pile of wood. By his unselfed love, the woman was in some degree freed from the limitations and small-mindedness of judging others based on skin color. Learning from his example, she became more unselfish, evidenced by her large donation to the Tuskegee Institute and her work to persuade some of her wealthy acquaintances to donate also.

Washington and others showed that we are great as we are good, clad in the garment of unselfed love.

CARACAS (Reuters) ? From new homes in slums to cash for struggling mothers, Venezuela's Hugo Chavez is unleashing a flood of state spending to try to tip the balance in what looks like the toughest presidential election of his political career.

The spending campaign may help win over wavering supporters and overwhelm the good looks and yes-we-can optimism of opposition candidate Henrique Capriles.

Yet Chavez's cash-driven push ahead of the vote in October will come with a heavy post-election hangover for the OPEC nation's economy.

Inflation could hit 35 percent, the debt burden looks set to rise, and a third currency devaluation in as many years is looking inevitable. All of that would force Venezuela to slam on the monetary and fiscal brakes in 2013.

The government budget shows this year's outlays jumping 46 percent from 2011, while social spending by state oil company PDVSA and a series of loosely regulated government funds are pumping additional liquidity into the system.

Venezuela's economy under the socialist Chavez has repeatedly defied doomsday predictions. With the price for the its mainstay exports of oil near $100 per barrel, investors remain happy to snap up its high-yielding bonds even as Chavez pushes ahead with nationalizations and puts more of the economy under state control.

Despite frequent diatribes about the evils of capitalism, Chavez has never threatened to default on Venezuela's debt.

That, combined with a steady flow of petrodollars, has given investors confidence its notes are safe and allowed Venezuela in 2011 to become Latin America's biggest issuer of global bonds.

But the spending boom risks increasing the country's dependence on oil revenue, increasing vulnerability to a price slump and strangling domestic industries already struggling with entrenched inflation and threats of nationalization.

"In the short term Venezuela is unlikely to have a credit event, but there's definitely growing concern about the medium and long term due to the pressure created by these latest bonds with such high coupons," said Felipe Hernandez of RBS Securities.

HOME, SWEET HOME

In the housing complexes where the government is handing out apartments to Venezuelans who have lived in poverty for generations amid a sea of oil wealth, the idea that the country cannot afford its current spending is seen as absurd.

"Sure there's money. Oil is making lots of cash," said Ruth Felisola, 44, a housewife who just moved into a new home in the state-built Santa Eduvigis complex of 158 apartments after her wood-and-zinc shack in a nearby slum collapsed.

"Every Venezuelan has a right to their drop of oil, and I've got mine right here."

Her three-bedroom hillside apartment, where she sells sodas,

chips and groceries, overlooks a valley filled with yellow cranes lifting pylons onto half-built concrete structures that in the coming months will become homes for needy families.

It is part of the government's plan to build 200,000 homes this year at a cost of about $14 billion. Most will go to slum-dwellers whose homes were damaged by floods in 2010.

Oil-funded social spending has worked for Chavez before. His creation of literacy, health and subsidized food programs were crucial to a decisive referendum win in 2004, as well as to a more-than 20 percentage point re-election victory in 2006.

Using windfall oil revenue to finance quickly-launched social campaigns has, though, proved less effective in stopping Venezuela's horrific rise in violent crime, or an electricity crisis that led to chronic blackouts in 2010.

Those problems opened space for opposition challengers like Capriles to portray Chavez as an incompetent manager more focused on ideological crusades than day-to-day problems.

Chavez's treatment for an unidentified cancer last year left him largely out of the public eye for weeks, and polls began showing Capriles nearly neck-in-neck with the president - something that had been unthinkable since 1999.

But the former soldier has already recovered lost ground as he staged what appeared to be a quick recovery. Latest polls show him enjoying a wide lead for the October vote, though this may shrink as Capriles' campaign gets started.

BIG SPEND, BIG HEADACHE

Chavez's support among the poor depends not only on state-backed social programs but also growth. The economy expanded 4 percent in 2011 and is seen growing at a similar pace this year thanks to higher oil prices and the heavy spending programs.

Maintaining that rhythm will be difficult in 2013 as inflation eats away at living standards and limited investment prevents industry from boosting productivity.

Venezuela's monetary liquidity, a measure of the money supply that is a key inflation indicator, rose nearly 50 percent in 2011 and will likely jump another 57 percent in 2012, said economist Asdrubal Oliveros of Caracas-based Ecoanalitica.

Chavez devalued the bolivar currency twice in 2010 as cheap imports left domestic industries losing market share, once from 2.15 per dollar to a two-tiered exchange rate of 2.6 and 4.3, and again later in the year by moving all exchanges to 4.3.

This boosted the price of imported goods and helped push inflation - a constant complaint of his poor supporters - to the highest on the continent in 2011 at 27.6 percent.

With ever more pressure on the bolivar, economists are universally predicting a devaluation, but delayed until after the vote because it is politically unpopular.

Investment in buildings, machinery and vehicles crucial for productivity increases to sustain economic growth - an indicator known as gross fixed capital formation - slumped more than 6 percent in 2009 and in 2010, the central bank said.

The private sector's investment in those areas fell nearly 30 percent in 2010, with state outlays picking up only some of the slack - a sign that domestic industries will become less productive and growth more dependent on government.

PDVSA, which has increasingly taken on the financing of social programs, issued $10.3 billion worth of dollar-denominated bonds last year.

Its issuance in 2011 alone comprised nearly half the $22.9 billion in outstanding bonds as of the end of 2011, a figure that does not include debt to its suppliers and service firms.

Venezuela and PDVSA together issued a total of $17.5 billion in dollar bonds last year, and analysts are predicting sales of another $12 billion to $15 billion in 2012.

The flood of supply has investors demanding higher yields from Venezuelan and PDVSA bonds, which at the start of the year were in some cases yielding as much as 14 percent.

Venezuelan sovereign bonds maturing in 2016 had yields around 10.7 percent in early February, compared to a 2.5 percent yield for Colombian bonds maturing in 2017.

Government sympathizers enjoy laughing at the prophets of doom over Venezuela's economy, in part because their forecasts have largely proven wrong for nearly a decade.

Legislator and economist Jesus Faria of the ruling Socialist Party (PSUV) noted that inflation during the Chavez era has been considerably lower than during the previous decade, when it reached a peak above 100 percent.

Fiscal expansion has benefited the country's poorest, he argued, denying any link to the upcoming vote.

"Our economic policies have nothing to do with the election, they respond to a program we call socialism," he said. "If we are increasing public spending, it's because we have to address social problems that have built up over centuries."

SOCIALISM NOT ALL BAD FOR WALL STREET

Though Venezuela did suffer more from the 2008 financial crisis than nearly any other country in the region, its two-year recession was far milder than predicted by opposition pundits.

And investors note that Chavez has explicitly avoided any discussion of a debt default.

This makes the high bond yields a bargain for those who can stomach the "headline risk," or short-term volatility that follows Chavez's state takeovers and threats against industry.

John Carlson, senior portfolio manager at Fidelity Investments in Boston, said Venezuelan paper represented 14 to 15 percent of the $6 billion he manages in about a half-dozen funds, concentrated mostly in the New Markets Fund.

"Over the next three to five years, we think there is clearly the ability to service all of that (debt) and there is a willingness to service it - and it looks cheap," Carlson said.

Most Wall Street analysts recommend Venezuela's debt despite their criticisms about economic and fiscal policy and concerns about the upcoming surge in pre-electoral spending.

Opposition leaders lambaste the arbitrary use of state funds to heighten what they call Chavez's populist cult-of-personality and prevent challengers from facing the former soldier in a fair fight. Chavez rebuffs such attacks with practiced indignation.

"No, it's not populism, that's a term invented by the neoliberals to try to justify the policies of hunger and misery against the peoples of the earth," Chavez told Congress in an annual address that went on more than nine hours.

He is also not the only one offering state largesse to win over voters. Opposition governors, mayors and councilmen, who are up for elections in December, also shower constituents with community centers, schools, and offers of financing.

On a recent campaign stop by the Caribbean coast, Capriles, governor of second-largest state of Miranda, promised fishermen credits and new motors should he win power.

Still, such offers are dwarfed by Chavez's wave of social programs created in recent months. Two offer direct cash payments to mothers and senior citizens, and another promises to train and find jobs for the unemployed.

"I give thanks to President Chavez for having started such a great program. This is going to let Venezuelans advance and have opportunities to work and learn new skills," said Delkys Llamosa, 27, a housewife waiting in line with her daughter to sign up for job training in downtown Caracas.

"Everything I have is because of him. I'm going to get my house from him, my children are getting benefits, and now I'm going to get a job. If he's not here, all this falls apart."

"You only have to look at what Yao Ming has done not just for the NBA but for brands that he represents both in the States and in China.

"Every top Chinese star that comes out from the Olympic Games or wherever it might be, there's always going to be an awful lot of interest for brands because all the major brands in the world are still looking to China for growth.

"A lot of brands want that positive 'halo effect' association they are going to get from being involved with a superstar."

China has long been the National Basketball Association (NBA)'s biggest market outside North America and the league is the country's most popular sporting import despite the retirement of former Houston Rockets centre Yao.

"Big brother"
Lin's exploits have been witnessed by tens of millions of Chinese fans on state run sportschannel CCTV 5 and, as of Monday, Lin had more than 800,000 fans on his microblogging account.

Yao became one of China's most popular public figures on the back of his exploits as a trailblazer in the NBA, topping the Forbes China celebrity list for six years from its inception in 2004 for both his influence and earnings.

Much of his income - in excess of $50 million for both 2008 and 2009 according to Forbes - came from lucrative deals to promote the likes of Pepsi, Visa, Apple, McDonalds and Reebok as he cashed in on a profile boosted by eight selections to the NBA's All Star game.

Lin, who has described Yao as a "big brother" figure and played in the Shanghai giant's charity game in Taiwan in 2010, has a long way to go to match that kind of NBA success and those kind of earnings.

To do so, he will have to compete with NBA luminaries like Lebron James and Kobe Bryant both on and off the court as top American professionals are now fixtures in Chinese advertising campaigns and frequently visit the country for promotional tours.

Stephon Marbury, himself a former point guard for the Knicks, took his one-man promotional campaign for his "Starbury" athletic shoes straight to the marketplace and has played for two seasons in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) league.

"If Yao Ming is China's largest export to the United States then Jeremy Lin is now America's self-produced, self-sold, fully-customized product for the Chinese market," a Chinese netizen posted on Weibo under the name Anakin Skywalker this week.

East Asian credentials
Walker, though, pointed to American golfers Tiger Woods, whose mother is Thai, and Michelle Wie, whose parents are South Korean, as examples of athletes whose Asian roots have garnered them a strong following in the most populous continent.

"Ethnicity can be very, very important," he added. "People like to see one of their own doing very well, no matter where you are from, no matter where you are born."

In Hong Kong, however, some were less than convinced of Lin's star quality. "I think it's because he's Asian (that he's getting so much attention)," said one young basketball player, practicing at Hong Kong's Wanchai Sports Center.

"He's not that special compared to the black players in the U.S."

Hong Kong resident Paul, a keen basketball player in his spare time, said: "I actually don't think it's that impressive. You can't compare to Yao Ming.

"It's only been five games so we don't know if his fame will continue, so you have to wait and see him play more. There's potential, but there's nothing special about him."

While some in China are reluctant to accept Lin's East Asian credentials, Taiwan's sensation-loving media has shown no such reticence and his exploits have shared the front pages of most newspapers.

The coverage, however, has been as much about the reaction to him in the U.S. media rather than about the player himself, as the island basks in the reflected glory of his sudden fame.

"It is awesome that Lin has been added to a list of ace Taiwanese athletes who have contributed to making our days and our weekends in particular," the United Evening News opined in its Sunday edition.

A new study has found that many older lung cancer patients get treatments that may not help them live longer. Published early online in CANCER, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society, the findings suggest that physicians should not routinely use radiation after surgery to treat lung cancer that is advanced but has not widely spread, at least in older patients.

Patients with locally advanced lung cancer, which has spread to only certain lymph nodes, usually undergo surgery to remove their tumors. Unfortunately, the cancer often comes back, so physicians frequently use radiation therapy to decrease patients' risk of cancer recurrence. To see if this additional treatment actually extends their survival, Juan Wisnivesky, MD, DrPH, of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City, and his colleagues analyzed information from the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER)-Medicare registry, which links cancer incidence and survival data to a master file of Medicare records. The investigators identified 1,307 cases of locally advanced lung cancer between 1992 and 2005.

In all, 710 patients (54 percent) received radiation following their surgery, but they were not more likely to survive longer than patients who did not receive radiation. "Our results show that we need more information about the potential benefits of radiation therapy before it is used routinely to treat this subset of lung cancer patients," said Dr. Wisnivesky. Such information may come from the Lung Adjuvant Radiotherapy Trial (LungArt), which is an ongoing phase III randomized controlled clinical trial evaluating the effectiveness of radiation following surgery in patients with locally advanced lung cancer.
